Planting a Rainbow

Charlotte and I have been reading this great book at bedtime called Planting a Rainbow. It is by the same author/illustrator of another favorite of ours called Eating the Alphabet. Eating the Alphabet has made shopping in the produce section of grocery stores so, so fun. Not many kids under age 2 could identify the likes of: kiwifruit, starfruit, mangoes, tangerines, huckleberries, figs, dates, etc.
Planting a Rainbow tells the story of how "mommy and me" plant bulbs, seeds and seedlings from the nursery and wait until summer comes when they grow into pretty flowers. It is a simple story with beautiful illustrations. But the funny thing is Charlotte can identify some pretty unique flowers: phlox, zinnia, daisy, cornflower, aster, daffodil, tulip, crocus, etc. I thought it would be fun to go to the nursery, pick out our own rainbow and plant it in one of the beds where our veggie garden was last year.
We haven't gotten our act together yet in veggie garden land... and might not this year. But at least we can have a rainbow. Charlotte doesn't quite get the concepts of prepping the soil, planting and being gentle but she had a great time in the backyard with us. I can't wait to see the all the pretty colors this summer! I'm most excited about this big dahlia but I can't remember the name of it. It has bright red and yellow blooms. My mom grows them from seed/tuber/bulb but I'm not that awesome. I cheated... but I think I deserve credit regardless! How many 38 1/2 week pregnant women do you know who get on their hands and knees and garden!?!?
